What the state says the job is
Coordinates highway construction or maintenance projects and/or inspects mowing/snow removal contracts. Performs advanced level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Operates advanced equipment. Perform tasks requiring the application of technical principles in the design, development and/or review of small engineering projects while learning to perform more advanced technical functions. Plans, organizes, assists, and inspects the proper installation of traffic control and safety of job sites; and performs other duties as required. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions of the class must be approved by a Licensed Professional Engineer under KRS Chapter 322.)
Examples of the work
In addition to performing duties listed in Highway Technician I, positions in this class will perform the following duties as appropriate: Coordinate highway construction or maintenance projects and/or inspects mowing/snow removal contracts and/or has responsibility for monitoring and verifying equipment rental usage contractors. May coordinate crew assignments. Implements custodial security policies and procedures in the use of inmate crews on roadways or roadsides. Performs a variety of advanced level work such as layout concrete forms, repair equipment, install pilings, excavate using boom equipment, haul heavy equipment and install extruded thermoplastic pavement markings.
Minimum qualifications
EDUCATION: High school graduate. EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have eight years of construction or highway maintenance experience. Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.
Special requirements
Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification.
