What the state says the job is
This is sewing work in a state facility. Employees in this class perform a variety of hand and machine sewing tasks in the repair and construction of garments and other cloth-constituted supplies for facility use. Work is usually of a routine nature, and assignments are explained or are of such a nature that requirements can be readily understood. Work is reviewed through the inspection of the quality and quantity of completed articles. Supervision is received from a sewing room supervisor or other supervisory staff.
Examples of the work
Sorts, checks for repair needs, replaces buttons, and patches and mends hose, clothing and linen for residents. Performs sewing work requiring the use of hand instruments, power sewing machines, and other equipment. Darns, stockings, sweaters and underwear by hand or with the aid of an electric darning machine. Alters clothing, and repairs mattresses, pillows and blankets. Manufactures dresses, slips, gowns, sheets, pillow cases, aprons, towels and other cloth-constituted articles. Tags and marks clothing and linen, sorts laundry, cleans sewing room and oils machines. Cuts patterns and trims, presses, folds, bands and tags articles for assembly. Performs related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
Six months of sewing or mending experience. or Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
