What the state says the job is

This is supervisory and skilled work in the operation of drill equipment used for taking surface and sub-surface soils, pavement, and rock samples. An employee in this job operates complex drilling equipment used in surface and sub-surface exploration. Work involves operating core and combination auger-core boring equipment to obtain samples, ensuring samples are properly lifted and identified, and resolving any field problems encountered. Supervision is exercised over staff operating less complex drilling equipment or assisting with the operation of complex equipment. Work is assigned with general directions by a technical supervisor who resolves unusual problems and reviews work for results attained. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: • Work is differentiated from the lower level job based on the responsibility for supervising drill operators.

Examples of the work

• Supervises the operation of and operates heavy-duty core boring and combination auger-core boring equipment to obtain surface and sub-surface soils, pavement, and rock samples. • Determines drilling stations from preliminary plans, supervises and participates in assembling drill apparatus, and operates a large truck and trailer used in relocating equipment. • Operates drilling apparatus to obtain samples by advancing augers through overburden; performs wash boring; recovers undisturbed samples; and uses diamond core drill in bedrock using tube, double tube, or other core barrels and auger boring with conventional or hollow stem augers.

Minimum qualifications

• One year of experience as a Drill Operator (commonwealth title); or • Three years of experience in the operation of core and auger boring equipment; or • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special requirements

• All positions require, at time of hire, an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
