What the state says the job is
This is routine security or introductory police work in protecting state property and maintaining the security of a state institution, park, or installation. An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling a state institution, park, airport, or an assigned area of the state capitol, to protect and guard property or persons from fire, theft, trespass or other hazards; or participates in a training program to acquire the skills, knowledges, and attitudes required to provide police services for Commonwealth facilities, grounds, and employees. Work may involve regulation the activities of patients, patrons or the general public, and may include performing limited police duties. Duties may require the use of motorized transportation to conduct patrols. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed rules and procedures.
Examples of the work
Patrols an assigned area of the state capitol or a welfare, health, or educational institution, or in a state park, airport, or installation; watches for fires, prowlers, vandalism, or other unusual occurrences; makes rounds of buildings and punches time clock periodically, and makes other reports as required; or participates in a formal and on-the-job training program designed to develop police knowledges, skills, and attitudes. Directs traffic and enforces parking regulations. Assists and directs visitors; furnishes information in a courteous manner. Maintains orderly conduct among patients, students, employees, and the general public. Performs incidental custodial and maintenance duties.
