What the state says the job is
This is journey level refrigeration mechanic trades work in the vocational training of inmates at a state correctional facility. An employee in this job provides structured on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the refrigeration mechanic trade to promote employability upon reintegration to the community. Work involves the close supervision and instruction of inmates during classroom and on-the-job training and work assignments. Employees are responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments. Work is received in the form of work orders which may be accompanied by diagrams, drawings, sketches, or blueprints. Employees independently determine procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates in carrying out assignments.
Examples of the work
• Instructs inmates in the practices, methods, and procedures of the refrigeration mechanic trade using appropriate lesson plans and training materials. • Uses and explains diagrams, drawings, sketches, and blueprints. • Demonstrates, explains, and instructs on the methods, procedures, materials, and tools used in the installation, repair, inspection, and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment. • Plans and assigns work to inmates receiving refrigeration mechanic training and reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to refrigeration mechanic trade standards.
Minimum qualifications
• Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.
